Note: Ranges are based on AKC (dogs) and CFA (cats) breed standards. Individual healthy weight varies with body condition, muscle mass, age, neuter status, and overall health. Use this as a starting point, and consult your veterinarian — especially if your pet is significantly outside the expected range or has medical conditions.

Is my pet at a healthy weight?
Pet obesity is the single most common preventable health problem in dogs and cats. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, an estimated 55-60% of US dogs and cats are overweight or obese, and most owners — even good ones — don't realize it until a vet points it out. The reason is simple: the line between "a little chubby" and "clinically overweight" is narrow and easy to miss day to day.
How vets actually assess weight
Veterinarians don't just weigh your pet. They combine the number on the scale with a Body Condition Score (BCS), usually a 1-9 scale (5 is ideal). Two quick at-home checks:
- The rib test: you should be able to feel the ribs through a thin layer of fat, like feeling knuckles on the back of your hand. You shouldn't have to press hard to find them, and you shouldn't see them clearly when the pet is standing.
- The waist test: looking down from above, your pet should have a visible waist (a slight inward curve) behind the rib cage. From the side, the belly should tuck up — not hang down level with the chest.
Breed standards as a starting point
Breed-standard weight ranges (from the AKC for dogs and CFA for cats) capture what a healthy adult of that breed typically weighs. The calculator above applies these ranges, with sex-adjusted bands where the standard differentiates. They are starting points, not medical assessments — a muscular working Lab can legitimately weigh more than the breed standard upper bound, and a small-framed female of any breed may sit at the low end. Treat the result as a sense-check, then combine with the rib/waist tests above.
What to do if your pet is overweight
Weight loss in pets is mostly about portion control, not exercise. Most overweight pets are getting 15-30% more calories than they need, usually from a combination of overgenerous main meals and uncounted treats. Run our Pet Food Portion Calculator to find your pet's actual daily calorie target, measure portions with a kitchen scale (not "scoops"), and reduce treats to under 10% of daily calories. Healthy weight loss is slow — about 1-2% of body weight per week is appropriate for both dogs and cats.
What to do if your pet is underweight
Underweight pets are less common but more concerning. A pet that's below the breed range when fed adequately can have parasites, dental pain, malabsorption, diabetes, or other underlying issues. If your result here shows underweight and you haven't intentionally restricted food, schedule a vet visit. Don't just "feed more" — find out why first.
Mixed-breed pets
For mixed-breed dogs, choose Mixed / Unknown and pick a size category. The calculator uses bucketed ranges: small (under 25 lbs), medium (25-50), large (50-90), and giant (over 90 lbs). For mixed-breed cats, we use a general healthy-cat range of 8-12 lbs, which fits the majority of domestic mixed cats. If your cat has a clear breed influence, picking that breed will give a more accurate range.
FAQ
How do I know if my pet is overweight?
Two checks: you should be able to feel the ribs without pressing, and you should see a waist tuck-in when viewed from above. The calculator gives a weight-vs-breed read, but the rib + waist visual checks are equally important.
What is a healthy weight for my dog breed?
It depends on breed and sex. A male Golden Retriever is 65-75 lbs; a male Chihuahua is 3-6 lbs. Pick your breed and sex above for the specific range.
What is a healthy weight for my cat breed?
Most domestic cat breeds fall between 7-12 lbs. Maine Coons can range 10-25 lbs, with males often heavier.
My pet is a mixed breed — can I still use this?
Yes — pick Mixed / Unknown and choose a size category. Bucketed ranges are used.
Does this tool replace a vet visit?
No. Use as a starting point. Body condition score, muscle mass, and individual health all matter.
